Overview
The Darma Valley runs north from Dharchula in Pithoragarh district, pressed between the Nepal border to the east and Tibet to the north — one of the last genuinely unspoilt river valleys in the Indian Himalaya. The Dhauli Ganga flows through it, fed by glaciers from the Panchachuli massif that dominates the head of the valley. The trail threads through nine ancient Shauka villages — Dar, Sela, Baling, Duktu, Nagling, Bungling and more — whose communities have traded across the Himalayan passes for centuries and whose stone-and-timber architecture is unlike anything in the more-visited trekking corridors. Above the villages, the valley opens into high alpine bugyals thick with rare medicinal plants: yarsagumba, atis, kutki. Access is only possible with an Inner Line Permit and a Protected Area Permit — which means the trail sees a fraction of the traffic of comparable routes in Garhwal or Nepal. At the valley's head, the glacier-fed meadows of Duktu sit beneath a direct view of all five Panchachuli peaks.
